How to sing and interpret the standards with "Jazz Feel"

Seminar & Masterclass

PROGRAMME

To Interpret jazz standards with the right feeling and give the song that personal touch, we will first learn the melody on the original score, choose the right shade of colours that can bring out the best qualities of our voice and memorize the text after reading it out aloud, this will allow us to feel the emotion that the author wants to convey the text, then reread the text by focusing on breaks or points of "silence".

We will listen several different versions of the same song sung by different artists and try to understand why their interpretation is able to convey such special different emotions analyzing technically the following steps which I call "Spelling" (the spelling) of a song:

  • Vocal Colours
  • Vocal dynamics/ registers
  • vibrato
  • rhythm / anticipation / syncopation /
  • phrasing
  • Alliteration
  • Improvisation / scat
  • pronunciation
  • emphasis of a consonant to enhance the expression of the sentence

Masterclass

During the Masterclass we will put into practice the "Spelling" above mentioned and then let the heart guide our emotions. Students may choose one of the following pieces for the masterclass:

  • Summertime
  • My funny valentine
  • Fly Me To The Moon
  • Imagine
  • I've Got You Under My Skin

Special attention will be given to interpretation. It's very important that each singer will give to the song his "personal touch" with the right feeling, using the tips mentioned above.
